Richard Lowe: Keeping Family Tradition Alive in St. Joseph

In the heart of the serene and breezy community of Parks Road, St. Joseph, stands R’s Meat & Variety and Bar—a one-stop shop known for its warmth, variety, and deep-rooted community values. Owned and operated by Richard Lowe, the shop is more than just a business; it’s a continuation of a family legacy.

“This business was conceptualised more or less in a family tradition,” Richard shares. “My mother used to run a small establishment when she was alive, and I just continued in that same vein. I was born here, raised here, and have lived here all my life.”

R’s Meat & Variety and Bar offers more than the name suggests. From essential household items to gas bottles and lottery services, Richard has made it a priority to meet the everyday needs of his community. While the entrepreneurial journey hasn’t been without its challenges, he remains grounded in his faith and purpose. “Sometimes it’s up, sometimes it’s down, but in everything, I continue to give God thanks.”

One pivotal moment in the life of the business came during the We Gatherin’ Barbados initiative. Richard’s shop was selected as one of the featured stops during the “Shop Limes” in St. Joseph. The experience, he says, brought meaningful visibility to his establishment. “It was good in terms of advertisement—it turned up more than enough. It let people know a small little business in the area exists and offers a whole variety of items.”

The increased attention translated into more foot traffic and, ultimately, increased economic activity. With hikers frequently passing through the area and the region’s well-known breezes and peaceful vibes, the exposure was well-received. “A lot of hikers gravitate to our area, so there has to be something special about it,” he added with pride.

Beyond commerce, Richard highlights the strong sense of community that defines Parks Road, St. Joseph.  From shared clean-up efforts to enjoying local delicacies like roast breadfruit during the season, the neighbourhood is one where togetherness thrives.

Reflecting on the We Gatherin’ initiative and his lifelong connection to St. Joseph, Richard beams, “For me, playing cricket in the road and riding bicycles as a child and that’s the adventure of St. Joseph. I love coming home to this place,” he said.
