In this edition of We is We Newsletter we conduct a short Q&A with Ashley D. Hunte about her fond memories of Barbados.

Q: How did you hear about We Gatherin?

A:   The marketing efforts for We Gatherin’ has been proactive and visible. I first heard about it through social media, whether it is Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc (BTMI) or seeing others I know attend We Gatherin events. Also, upon returning to the island through the immigration kiosk, I have seen signs at the airport and across the island.

Q: What does We Gatherin mean to you?

A: We Gatherin’ is both a celebration and a powerful reminder that home [Barbados] is more than just a place. It represents a shared sense of Bajan pride and unity, bringing us together to honour our identity, no matter where life has taken us or how we identify as Bajans-by birth, descent or choice. It is a moment to reconnect with our roots, our culture and one another.

Q: How many weeks|months|years have you been to Barbados?

A: I have been going back and forth to Barbados for about a year and five months.

Q: What promoted you to return to Barbados?

A: Having grown up and spent my formative years in Barbados, I always knew that I would want to return one day. It was just a matter of waiting for the right opportunity- both in my career and schedule to be able to make that leap. A recent design opportunity combined with a more flexible work routine has allowed me to come back and fully embrace this chapter.

Q: What do you love about Barbados?

A: Barbados is home a place filled with nostalgia and a deep sense of community. When I am in Barbados the stress I often feel in the United States seems to melt away. Living on an island surrounded by supportive family and friends, rich culture, stunning beaches, and so much more is truly priceless.
