For the Grant family, Barbados is more than just a birthplace, it is home, no matter where life has taken us. Originally from Belair, St. George, the Grants have always maintained a deep-rooted connection to the island, ensuring that even those born abroad experience the rich culture, warm community, and cherished traditions of our homeland.
In 2020, the family had planned to return to Barbados to celebrate Richard Grant’s 60th birthday, but the pandemic put those plans on hold. Now, five years later, we are finally making that long-awaited homecoming a reality, gathering from across the USA, primarily Texas and New York, to celebrate our patriarch’s 65th birthday this April. His wife Sonia has taken the lead in bringing everyone together, 140 family members strong will come together to reinforce our love for Barbados, for each other and our commitment to keeping our roots alive.
To make the trip as memorable as possible, we’ve planned an itinerary that is a true celebration of Bajan life. From an island tour to a lively night at Oistins and a special birthday party at The Radisson Aquatica, every moment is designed to immerse the family in the island’s beauty, flavours, and traditions. Our official celebrations will conclude with a heartfelt church service at the family’s home church, St. Augustine, a reminder of the faith and values that have always united us, followed by a relaxing day at the beach.
Beyond celebrating, the Grant family is also giving back. With a foundation cast in generosity, we have collectively chosen to donate school supplies to the Cuthbert Moore Primary School and the Progressive Optimist Club, reinforcing our commitment to supporting the next generation.
For us, home is more than just an address, it’s family, food, the beach, and the vibrant culture that has shaped our identity. Even those of us who reside in the U.S., during Thanksgiving we also celebrate by honouring Barbados’ Independence Day, a testament to the enduring love for our beautiful Barbados. Richard himself embodies this passion through music, keeping the island’s rhythms alive as an upcoming steel pan player.
As our tribe return for We Gatherin’ 2025, we see this as more than just a visit, we are reconnecting with the land, the people, and the spirit that has always been a part of who we are at our core. We hope that our story is a shining example of how Barbadians, no matter where we are in the world, always find our way back home.
