Tucked away in the heart of St. George is a powerhouse of creativity, community spirit, and cultural pride that is The Ellerton Youth and Cultural Club. For decades, the club has been a space where youth are empowered, culture is celebrated, and service to others is at the core of its mission.
Founded to foster community engagement and upliftment, the Ellerton Youth and Cultural Club has made an indelible mark through its participation in national events such as the Opening Gala, Holetown Festival and the National Youth Parade. The club has a vibrant Tuk Band, Mudda Sully, Shaggy Beards, and Silk Walkers, each contributing to the cultural richness of the parish and beyond.
President of the Club, Shavor Brathwaite, emphasized the club’s need for philanthropy stating, “We normally do give back to schools, so if persons are willing to give donations for our back-to-school drive or even just help the children… people can also give like that.” The club not only offers young people the chance to perform and showcase their talents, but also ensures they are fed, supported, and transported safely to and from events.
Despite a short break in activities, the leadership is determined to reignite programming by summer. This summer, we will have a little boys club or camp for the boys and stuff. It also helps to provide for them during the summer or any vacation,” said President Shavor Brathwaite.
Community involvement is open to all, regardless of where you live. “You don’t have to be a member of St. George,” Kaianne shared, adding that those interested can connect via the club’s Instagram page or directly through WhatsApp. For persons overseas who want to give, the club welcomes contributions toward meals, transport, and educational drives.
Meeting primarily at the Ellerton Community Centre on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the Club remains a hub of togetherness and youth empowerment.
As Brathwaite passionately puts it, “When we do performances, sometimes we like to provide breakfast for them before,” showing that for the Ellerton Youth and Cultural Club, it’s not just about the performance, it’s about the people.
