Barbadian-born Dr. Winslow Sargeant is a distinguished engineer, entrepreneur, and public policy leader who has made significant contributions to innovation and small business development in the United States.
A former resident of Marchfield, St. Philip, Winslow recounts memories of growing up in the area until the age of seven when he would relocate to Boston.
“Barbados is always a special place to visit, so it did not take much for me to return. However, having the opportunity to visit St. Philip-my birthplace, made this trip particularly significant. I left Barbados at the tender age of seven to emigrate to the Bostin in the United States, but I still have vivid memories of my childhood. Those early days remain deeply meaningful to me,” he said.
Winslow has been coming to Barbados since 2010 to reconnect with his Barbadian roots.
“I have had the pleasure of visiting Barbados several times. Each visit has been enjoyable and an enriching experience. From the moment I arrived, the ease of navigating customs sets a welcoming tone. Barbados is a stunning island nation, full of vibrant culture, scenic beauty, and accessible beaches. There’s always something new to discover and appreciate,” he said.
Winslow noted that he heard a speech from the Prime Minister of Barbados, The Honourable Mia Mottley which encouraged Barbadians to come home for We Gatherin 2025 and he decided that he would come to Barbados and connect with his family and friends who reside on island.
“… her words resonated deeply with me and my family. Inspired by her message, my siblings and I created a WhatsApp group to begin planning our return. That initiative brought us together in Barbados in July 2025. [I think] We Gatherin represent a powerful call to return-a homecoming for Barbadians living in the Disapora. For me and my family, it is a meaningful opportunity to connect with relatives we have never met and to strengthen ties with extended family members in a joyful, celebratory atmosphere,” he said.
Winslow who currently resides in Washington, DC said that one of the things he misses about Barbados as compared to America is the culture.
“It would have to be the warmth of the people and the conversations with fellow Barbadians. On my trip I had a lot of memorable experiences. I took a catamaran tour along the West Coast which offered breathtaking views of the island. I also joined a guided bus tour that included stops in St. Andrew, Codrington College and Bathsheba. Each location added something unique to the journey,” he said.
Dr. Winslow Sargeant’s visit to Barbados not only marked a return to his roots but served as a reminder as to why we all should seek to Come Long Home to Barbados during We Gatherin’ 2025.
