As the waves lapped the shore of Foul Bay Beach and music filled the air, three members of the Barbadian diaspora found themselves surrounded by familiar smiles, warm sunshine, and a hearty game of dominoes. Among the many returning nationals who came home for the Sweet Fuh Days We Gatherin’ celebrations was Devaun Alleyne, a proud Barbadian now living in Canada, alongside Heather Harewood and Esther Harewood, sisters from the United States. The trio was among dozens who gathered at Foul Bay Beach for the highly anticipated Family Fun Day.

Devaun, Heather, and Esther all agreed that this type of event was more than just a beach lime it was a chance to reconnect with their roots, rekindle childhood memories, and strengthen bonds across generations. Their laughter could be heard echoing across the beach as they engaged in a lively game of dominoes, a tradition deeply embedded in Caribbean culture and family gatherings.

“This is how we used to picnic years ago,” one of them shared, smiling at the sound of tiles slapping against the wooden table. “The atmosphere here is just beautiful. It reminds us of what makes Barbados special.”

For the Harewood sisters, who hadn’t been to Foul Bay in years, the moment was filled with nostalgia. They reminisced about picking up seashells along the shore, walking through the shallows, and soaking up the sun in a place that always felt like home. Though some things have changed, like the seaweed brought in by shifting currents, the spirit of the place remains the same welcoming, peaceful, and full of life.

Devaun reflected on the importance of gatherings like this, especially for Barbadians living abroad. “These kinds of events bring us all back together. They remind us why we’re proud to be Bajan. No matter how far we go, Barbados is still home.”

We Gatherin’ Family Fun Day wasn’t just about entertainment. It was about reclaiming a sense of community, celebrating culture, and honouring those who carry Barbados with them no matter where they are in the world.

And as the dominoes clinked, the breeze danced through the trees, and Bajan accents mixed with foreign twangs, one thing was clear: this gathering wasn’t just a reunion it was a homecoming.
