Tyrone Downes is a Barbadian professional boxer who competed in the 1970s to 1990s across multiple weight classes ranging from featherweight to welterweight and won titles such as Barbados featherweight, lightweight titles, the WBC FECARBOX Featherweight title, the Commonwealth middleweight title, and also challenged for the New York State title against Larry Barnes and the WBC Featherweight title against Jeff Fenech.
He is back in Barbados giving back by hosting free boxing classes at his alma matter Grantley Adams Memorial to allow the young males to have an outlet to express themselves. In this excerpt he shares what he loves about Barbados.
“What I love from St. Joseph, I love everything that is why I want to come back. I want to come back up hey. I want to get ah piece ah land in St. Joseph. Growing up in St. Joseph was so exciting for me, because I used to live in Parris Hill. I [went] to school at [Grantley Adams Memorial]. I also lived in Bathsheba. I could swim good. I remember getting quarrel wid for gine in de sea. I used to bade in a place called De Basin. It is a big rock, you could go up an dive down inside, it is down dey still De Basin,”
