By Cara L. Jean-Baptiste

The unmistakeable rhythm and culture of Barbados took over Brooklyn with “Oistins in BK” campaign. This event was a vibrant cultural showcase that brought the island’s iconic fish fry experience to life in one of New York’s most diverse boroughs.

Hosted by the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI) over 1,000 attendees, including members of the Barbadian diaspora, friends of Barbados, media and curious onlookers attended this event. The experience celebrated not just the tastes of the island but the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of 20+ Bajan vendors who are now living and working in the United States.

The BTMI booth was a flavourful hub of activity. Brooklyn got a taste of home thanks popular Oistins restaurant, Pat’s Place, who dished out samples of their beloved Bajan recipes, which included flying fish , cou-cou, and macaroni pie to NYC. The culinary experience was further elevated with Planteray’s Caribbean cocktails, which were created by Barbadian mixologist, Dameain Williams.

The energy of the event remained high throughout the evening thanks to Barbados’ newest Tourism and Cultural Ambassador, DJ Puffy. Puffy kept the crowd moving with a mix of soca, reggae and dancehall. The soundtrack of the night offered both nostalgia and celebration and ultimately, reminded many of the patrons in attendance of home.

As the sun set on an unforgettable evening, one lucky attendee had even more reason to celebrate as American Airlines sponsored a grand prize giveaway of a roundtrip flight for two to Barbados!

“Oistins in BK was a powerful reminder of the pride and passion that our diaspora carries with them wherever they go. To see over 20 Bajan vendors thriving, sharing their talents, and connecting with more than a thousand attendees in the heart of Brooklyn speaks volumes about the strength of brand Barbados abroad. This event was a celebration and a bridge back home,” said Senior Business Development Officer, USA, Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. Tenisha Holder.

With food, music and community at the core, the event captured the island’s spirit and left everyone wanting more!
