“This experience has profoundly impacted me.”

The past six months of the We Gatherin’ journey have been nothing short of extraordinary as it has been a  rediscovery of who we are as a people and a nation. Each parish we’ve visited  opened its arms, proudly showcasing its uniqueness, heritage, and spirit, reminding us of the beauty that exists across this 166 square miles of pure niceness. From the bustling community energy to the quiet pride in tradition, Barbados has revealed itself in ways that continue to inspire me deeply.

I have had the pleasure of making new friends, learning new things about each parish, and witnessing the transformative impact that happens when communities, Non-Governmental Organizations, government agencies, and the private sector unite with a shared purpose. The collaboration has been heartening with people from all walks of life, coming together to improve lives and uplift each other. That kind of unity is powerful.

Of course, the journey hasn’t been without its challenges, but the spirit of the We Gatherin Secretariat’s  team has remained resolute. The hard work, dedication, and resilience shown by all involved make me, like the vast majority of Bajans, eternally grateful. Our diaspora, too, has been a beacon of inspiration, reminding us that no matter where Bajans are in the world, their love for home is unwavering and strong.

Personally, this experience has profoundly impacted me. It has reaffirmed my belief in the power of community engagement and its ability to tackle pressing societal issues; from underemployment to food security, housing, and moral education. Seeing different generations engage, share knowledge, and celebrate their roles within their communities has been beautiful. There is parish pride, there is respect for traditions, and there is ownership of cultural preservation and that gives me great hope.

We Gatherin has created communities filled with love, memories, and a renewed sense of purpose. And as we move forward, I do so with a full heart, proud of what we’ve built together and excited for what’s still to come.
