When you think of St. Thomas, images of rolling hills and a strong, close-knit community probably come to mind. At the heart of that community is Sheldon Hope  educator, musician, mentor, and proud son of the soil. His story is one of giving back through service, music, and the kind of mentorship that changes lives.

From a young age, Sheldon knew exactly where his heart was. “Growing up in St. Thomas, it was all about family and community,” he recalls. “We learned how to be content, how to respect each other, and how to show up for one another things I still carry with me today.”

That deep-rooted sense of belonging shaped his passion for music. By seven, he knew he was destined to follow that rhythm. With encouragement from music teachers at Coleridge and Parry School, he found his purpose in music education  a field where he continues to make waves.

Now a teacher at Parkinson Memorial School, Sheldon is passionate about helping students grasp the deeper layers of music. “Everyone loves music,” he said, “but not everyone understands the theory behind it. That’s where I come in.”

His impact isn’t limited to the classroom. In his home parish, Sheldon has worked with choirs and music groups, using his gifts to uplift others. As the Music Director for the United Holy Church of America, he now oversees the musical development of 12 churches a role that keeps him grounded in his community roots.

One of his proudest achievements? Mentoring former student Shamar Coombs, who’s now one of Barbados’ top sound engineers. “We held on to him, showed him a different path,” Sheldon shares. “Now he’s working with artists like Machel Montano. That’s what it’s all about.”

For Sheldon, the mission is simple: empower others and preserve culture through music. “It’s never been about accolades. I just want to contribute  to culture, to music, to young people’s lives,” he says. “If I can make even one life better, I’ve done my job.”

As We Gatherin’ shines a spotlight on the people who help define Barbados, Sheldon Hope stands tall a living example of what it means to serve with heart and harmony.
